Starting point

Our client was an assistant head teacher at a local secondary school, nearing his retirement. He and his wife wanted their garden to be transformed ready for retirement. The client joked with us that he was incredibly particular and wanted to work with a company who would understand and work with this.

The challenge /opportunity

To transform a rather ordinary residential garden with existing curves and informal planting into a mediterranean themed garden with a strong sense of formality and angles, to include a direction and an interpretation of an element of the owner’s control! In addition to the requested formality, the client was keen to incorporate a raised area of seating, a softening of the corners, and to capitalise on the sun trap areas in spring and autumn but to have shade in the summer! A key requirement for the front garden was the inclusion of parking.

The customer chose to work with us due to our ability to work in a collaborative way, taking into account his meticulous sense of attention to detail. The client expected a high degree of accuracy both in terms of interpretation of the brief and the standard of work and we were able to meet his exacting requirements. It was essential for the client to feel that the company they worked with would be able to communicate effectively with them throughout the project and we achieved this by frequent management site visits and regular update meetings which included the client, site staff and the project manager.

We began with a site visit, exploring the current features of the garden, particularly the orientation to the light, the existing features, and the things about them the client liked and their future wishes.
