Reviving A Waterlogged Terrace

Reviving A Waterlogged Terrace

Our client had had a ground worker in to create a level lawn terrace, but unfortunately the grass did not establish well, and the terrace was often waterlogged.

We were called in to get the grass established for the Summer. On investigation it was found that there was a layer of heavily compacted soil below the surface which was impleading the drainage and had turned the soil anaerobic making it toxic to worms and plant roots.

We ripped the whole area with a mole plough on an excavator to break through the hard compacted layer.  The area was then rotovated to further break up the hard lumps of soil, then regraded to levels, the seed bed prepared and seeded with grass.

We, all too frequently, encounter anaerobic soil as the result of building activities, simply because builders do not understand that soil is a living ecosystem and they treat it like an inert aggregate.  Consequently, if it becomes compacted and anaerobic it is toxic to plants and worms resulting in them dying or not establishing very well.

The pores in the soil became full of water rather than oxygen in the soil and this in turn inhibited nutrient movement creating an anaerobic and unhealthy environment resulting in a patchy lawn which was both often unusable and also unsightly

Our clients had a large lawn area to the rear of their property which frequently became waterlogged for sustained periods of time following rainfall. Our team of were able to re model the ground, using machinery to break down the anaerobic soil and create a level area which can now be reseeded creating a useable and attractive lawn.

The most common errors are:

  • Piling soil up too high so the centre of the pile gets compacted.
  • Driving over soil when it is wet.
  • Using compacting machinery to try and get a flat surface.
